How MyInvois integration actually works
Most businesses researching MyInvois land on one of two paths without realising there's a choice: buy an e-invoicing software subscription that handles submission for you, or integrate your existing ERP or invoicing system directly with the MyInvois API. Both are legitimate — they solve different problems, at different points in a business's growth, and picking the wrong one for your situation is the most common way this goes wrong.

The two real paths to MyInvois compliance
Path one: e-invoicing software — a subscription product where you issue invoices inside their system, or route your invoices through their middleware, and they handle UBL 2.1 formatting and MyInvois submission for you. Fast to set up, low upfront cost, genuinely the right call for a business that doesn't already run a real invoicing or ERP system worth preserving.
Path two: direct API integration — your existing invoicing, accounting or ERP system generates the invoice, and a custom-built integration layer converts it to spec-correct UBL 2.1, signs it with XAdES, and submits it to LHDN's MyInvois API directly. No new front-end for your finance team to learn, no duplicate data entry between systems, and the integration is built around your actual invoice volume, edge cases and existing workflow rather than a generic product's assumptions.
The question that decides which path is right
It comes down to one thing: do you already have an invoicing, accounting or ERP system your business depends on? If yes — and especially if it's a system with real customisation, multiple entities, or high invoice volume — a direct integration usually pays for itself by avoiding duplicate work and a second source of truth. If you're issuing invoices from spreadsheets or an ad-hoc process today, adopting an e-invoicing product's own interface is often genuinely simpler than integrating a system that doesn't exist yet.
Volume and edge cases matter too. Credit notes, cancellations, consolidated invoices and self-billed invoices each have their own validation rules under MyInvois — a generic middleware product handles the common cases well; a business with unusual invoice types or very high volume often needs the edge-case coverage a custom integration is built and tested against specifically.
What a direct integration actually involves
Three technical pieces, regardless of which system it's being built for: generating spec-correct UBL 2.1 XML from your system's existing invoice data, correctly implementing XAdES digital signatures with proper PKI credential handling, and managing the submission-and-validation sequence against LHDN's sandbox and then production environments. Get any of these wrong and invoices get rejected outright, or — worse — silently fail compliance in a way that only surfaces during an audit.
When to make the call
Given Phase 4 (RM1m–5m turnover) has been live since 1 January 2026 and the exemption threshold now sits at RM1m, most growing Malaysian SMEs are past the point where this is optional. The lead time matters: a direct integration is realistically an 8–14 week engagement including sandbox validation, so the decision is worth making before a deadline is close, not after.
Questions
Can I switch from e-invoicing software to a direct integration later?
Yes — plenty of businesses start on a middleware product to hit an early compliance deadline, then move to a direct integration once volume or edge cases justify it. The two aren't mutually exclusive stepping stones.
Does a direct integration replace our accounting software?
No. The integration sits alongside your existing system — reading invoice data out of it and handling the MyInvois submission — rather than replacing it.
How long does a direct MyInvois integration actually take?
8–14 weeks is typical, including requirements gathering against your system's real data, sandbox validation, and a production cutover with a support window either side of it. See our MyInvois integration service for the full breakdown.
