Causal Labs is a small, senior team — not an agency with account managers between you and the engineers who build your system, and not a single freelancer carrying the whole scope alone. Every engagement is owned end-to-end by the people who write the code, from the first scoping call to the system running unattended in production months later.

Why 'Causal'

Most software tracks what happened after the fact — a dashboard showing last month's numbers, a log file explaining a failure after it's already cost someone a day. We're named for the alternative: understanding why something happened, and engineering systems that act on that understanding. A workflow engine that removes the actual bottleneck in how a team processes orders, not just the symptom nearest the surface. A causal-inference pipeline that estimates a real effect instead of reporting a correlation that happens to move together. The name is a commitment to that standard, not a brand exercise.

How we work

Every engagement follows the same six-stage process — requirements gathering, scoping & proposal, design, build, QA & review, then handover & support — regardless of whether the deliverable is a multi-tenant SaaS platform, a WhatsApp automation system, or a MyInvois e-invoicing integration. Lead times are stated upfront in the proposal and held to; the same process that ships a four-week automation also governs a sixteen-week platform build, just with more stages of design and QA in between. Where we work

Based in Malaysia, serving companies across Singapore, Malaysia and Southeast Asia — remotely by default, on-site where a project calls for it. Regulated-domain work such as RegTech and Malaysian e-invoicing (MyInvois/LHDN) is delivered with the same audit-logging, digital-signature and compliance discipline the domain requires, not treated as a special case bolted onto a standard build. The regional focus means the stack and integrations are chosen with local systems and regulatory bodies in mind from the start, not adapted after the fact.

Who we work with

Engagements span two broad shapes: SMEs replacing a process that has outgrown a spreadsheet or a no-code tool, and earlier-stage product teams building a platform from scratch. Both get the same senior engineer and the same six-stage process — what differs is emphasis. An SME migrating off Excel cares most about provable parity with the numbers already in use; a startup building a SaaS platform cares most about shipping a working product fast without accruing tenancy or security debt that becomes expensive to unwind later.

How engagements are scoped

Scope starts from the process as it runs today, not a feature wishlist — the failure modes of the current spreadsheet, script, or manual workflow usually define the real requirements better than a request list does. That scoping stage ends in a written proposal with a concrete delivery window and stack recommendation, priced as a fixed scope rather than open-ended hourly billing, so there's a number to plan a budget around before any code is written.

Years spent working inside startups and small businesses, not only building software for them, shape how engagements get scoped here.
